Charles Otis Johnston Sr.
Charles Otis Johnston Sr. was born in Harper County KS. After serving in the U. S. Army during World War I. He attended Kansas State Agricultural College, and after graduation he worked with the U. S. Department of Agriculture as a Research Plant Pathologist and as Adjunct Faculty in the Botany and Plant Pathology at Kansas State. He was a World Authority on leaf rust of wheat and studied pathogenic specialization in the wheat leaf rust fungus. He loved sports and was an avid fan of Kansas State Athletics and served as basketball tickettaker in the Nichols Gym and early Ahearn Fieldhouse eras. He bled purple! Charles and his wife Minnie had three children: Charles Otis Jr, Phylis and Marjorie.
Charles married Minnie Winona Augustine, daughter of William T. Augustine and Clara Viola Honey. (Minnie Winona Augustine was born on 1 Sep 1898 in Shirley Township, Cloud, Kansas, died in 1980 in Manhattan, Riley, Kansas and was buried in Sunset Cemetery - Manhattan, Riley, Kansas.)
